Do you get enquiries from your signage?

One of the best marketing investments a builder can make, is to make their vehicles, their team and their site signage stand out. Potential clients will be driving past building sites and if your site signage and your vehicles are visible and stand out, you have a high chance of getting enquiries from exactly the right type of people you’d like to attract.

There are no ongoing costs compared to other types of advertising which can be ongoing and very expensive. So it’s great value for money.

Get your vehicles sign-written so they really stand out. In addition to the branding, make sure you promote the key benefits of doing business with you. Also make sure the vehicles appear fresh and tidy, ideally all using the same colour.

Provide uniforms to your team and have these branded. Make sure your team always appears smart and tidy. Your clients and your potential clients will form an opinion based on what they see.

Invest in site signage that really stands out. Make it as big as possible. Here some do’s and don’ts:

Do not put your branding on top of the signage. People are not interested on who you are, rather what you can do for them.

So, do put a meaningful, benefit bearing headline on your site signage.

Add a stand-out image, of the type of construction you do, to the main area of the advert.

Highlight some benefits of doing business with you.

Have a picture of yourself on the side of the sign. People trust people, especially people just like themselves.

Have a strong call to action. Offer something of value so people call you and make enquiries.

At the bottom of the sign, add your brand, company information and contact details.

Do you have a professional brand that stands out?

It is most common to see a building business branded by the business owners name - for example “Steve Smith Builders”. This may be OK when you first start out and there will be a number of potential clients that think that they would enjoy working directly with the owner of the building business.

The problem is that when you grow, people will still expect to work with the business owner and you may not always be available. By now you will most likely have outgrown your brand. There are also many other negative connotations that are associated with a name like “Steve Smith Builders”. If you want to re-brand your business at this stage, you will have lost a few years of brand recognition and that could be costly.

The best way is to name and brand your business properly as early as possible - ideally right from the start. Come up with a meaningful name or a name that is easy to remember. Make sure that it contains the keyword that represents your trade. For example Premium Homes, Keystone Construction, Hometrends Builders, Lockwood Homes, High Country Homes, Landmark Homes, House Lifters Ltd, House Levellers, Heritage Levellers, Smartlift etc.

Get your logo and your branding professionally designed. This is not the place to cut costs and have your mates cousin design your branding. It will cost a bit, but it is a one-off cost and your business will benefit from it every day.

Is your building business specialised and you are seen as the expert in your field?

This is probably one of the most important decisions you as a business owner, will have to make, and it is also the most difficult one.
A building business, who is highly specialised and seen as an expert, has a much higher chance of being profitable, will have a value and can be sold.

Most building businesses try to do everything and are by default “Jacks of all trades and master of none”. Because of the incredible wide spectrum of work a builder can do, such a business is actually quite difficult to run. Forget about selling such a business. You will not find a buyer.

Just think of hiring a winning team and having them well trained and able to deliver excellent work. It is hard and such builders are hard to find.

As a general builder you will be competing with a lot of others and there is going to be a huge pressure on price. This will have a massive negatively affect on your profit and cashflow.

On the other hand, a builder who is highly specialised, will find it easy to become a master at what they do. It will be much easier to find people and train them in your niche. Such a business will be very efficient and make a great profit and have no cashflow problems.

The trend of specialisation is happening everywhere. Gourmet restaurants that can prepare a huge range of food are going broke while specialised food outlets (hamburgers, sushi, sandwich, chicken…) are making great profits. General car dealers are struggling while the highly specialised oil changers are reaping it in. Think kitchen specialist, bathrooms, special cladding systems, highly insulated windows and doors.

Unless you figure out how you could specialise you will find it tough. Marketing is tough, sales is tough, profits are tough, finding a good team is tough.
